Canadian Government Vanier Graduate Scholarship Awards for International Students 2022

A big hurray! For the academic session 2022/23, the Canadian Government is pleased to offer Vanier Graduate Scholarships to outstanding international students.

Canadian universities offer applicants not only a world-class education but also the chance to get a permanent residency after graduation.


The story of

Designed to support students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of academic achievement while pursuing graduate studies in the social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, or health, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Award program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified, outspoken doctoral students.

Criteria for selection include:

  • The institution they plan to attend must nominate them
  • The criteria below must be met
    • Achievements in academics
    • Potential for future research
    • Potential for leadership (demonstrated ability)

A description of the scholarship duration and benefits

  • The scholarship will be granted for 3 years at a value of $50,000 (non-renewable).
  • Three federal agencies award scholarships equally:
    • Research Institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
    • NSERC is the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
    • Research Council for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSHRC)

Process for Entry:

Applicants must be nominated by their intended institution of study. There is no direct application process for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS).

Using the Universities Canada website, begin researching Canadian institutions. It is recommended that you browse each university’s website and thoroughly research the programs of interest in which you would like to pursue your doctorate, as well as supervisors for your proposed study.

The second step is to check that your institution has a quota for the application year on the Vanier CGS quota page.

Documents that are required

Following are the documents candidates must submit to apply;

  • A ResearchNet application form (including two letters of recommendation, each with three sections)
  • Completing the Common CV (CCV) provides information on how to complete it.
  • An overview of your research contributions (maximum one page)
  • An English or French Personal Leadership Statement (maximum 2 pages)
  • Optional Special Circumstances (maximum 0.5 pages)
  • Reference letters (maximum of two pages) from two senior leaders
  • For an English application, a maximum of two pages may be submitted; for a French application, a maximum of 2.5 pages may be submitted.
  • Five-page maximum list of references for the project
  • Transcripts of official hearings
